First Lady Jill Biden will undergo an outpatient procedure next week to remove a small lesion found during a skin cancer screening, White House physician Kevin O’Connor said in a statement on Wednesday.
Doctors recommended the procedure, known as Mohs surgery, out of an “abundance of caution,” O’Connor said. “We will offer an update after the procedure is completed and we have more information.”
The lesion was found above the first lady’s right eye, O’Connor added.
The Mayo Clinic describes Mohs surgery as a procedure used to treat skin cancer, with doctors cutting away thin layers of skin until there are no signs of cancer. It is not clear if the first lady has a history with skin cancer, though President Joe Biden has had non-melanoma skin cancers removed.

The first lady had received two consecutive negative tests and was allowed out of isolation. She then traveled to her beach house in Delaware to reunite with the President.
Three days later, Dr. Biden’s deputy communications director Kelsey Donohue issued a statement showing she is facing another outbreak of the virus – an occasional side effect of treatment with Paxlovid, which her husband also experienced in July.

“The First Lady has experienced no recurrence of symptoms and will remain in Delaware, where she has resumed isolation procedures,” Donohue said at the time. “The White House Medical Department has conducted contact tracing and close contacts have been notified.”
The first lady, who is double-vaccinated and double-boosted like her husband, initially escaped her president’s battle with COVID unscathed. It’s unclear how she was exposed to the virus in the weeks following his recovery.
