Just after 6 o'clock local time, a shooting took place in the 5900 block of MacArthur Boulevard, according to the Oakland Police Department.

ShotSpotter, a gunshot detecting technology, was activated, and officers were sent to the area.

Officers arrived and discovered the shooting site and shell casings, but there were no victims.

Soon later, the Oakland Police Department was informed that several people with gunshot wounds had driven themselves to nearby hospitals.

One of the eight victims of gunshot wounds, according to the police, passed away as a result of their wounds. The other seven were described as stable.

It's unclear what caused the shooting. The shooting is still being investigated, so police are asking the public for any information.

A tragic week for California

The massacre in Oakland is the third major shooting to occur in the state since Saturday, leaving at least 19 people dead.

According to the Gun Violence Archive, which keeps track of shootings in the country and defines a mass shooting as four or more persons being shot or killed, there have already been 39 mass shootings in the country less than a month into the new year.

Despite California's strict gun laws, shootings continue to occur. According to the Giffords Law Center to Prevent Gun Violence, California has the nation's strictest gun control regulations, including bans on assault weapons, stringent background check standards, and high risk protection orders.

The shooting in Oakland took place around three and a half hours after at least seven people were killed and one other was critically hurt in shootings on Monday at two different locations in Half Moon Bay, Northern California.

The shootings in Half Moon Bay took place at agricultural establishments outside of the 11,000-person community, which is located around 30 miles south of San Francisco. A suspect in that shooting, aged 67, was taken into custody. It's still unknown why that shooting occurred.

The bloodbath came after the Saturday shooting in a ballroom in Monterey Park, Southern California, which claimed the lives of 11 people who had come there to celebrate the Lunar New Year.

Investigators in that case think the alleged shooter may have had his ex-wife in mind when he opened fire.

Monday evening, Governor Gavin Newsom tweeted: "I am being pulled away to receive information of another shooting while I am at a hospital meeting with victims of a horrible shooting. Half Moon Bay, this time. Drama on top of drama."
